'm, obviously, partisan. but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhere. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate, so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. the president on the other hand, has to be president every day. just gave two speeches i tho

gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so? >> -- to compete for latino votes, but he's not a skillful enough politician to anticipate that, and all he can do is say whatever is necessary to get him through the day. this comes out of his experience in the business community where, you know, all he did when he went in and closed these deals is say whatever was necessary to close the deal no matter whether it was true or not and then he'd negotiate about it later, you know, after he took over the company. so this is the world he comes out of, and it just does not equip him for politics. here is the other thing that i think has been missed in the last couple days is there's been some, you know, journalism that says, well, okay, he's not equipped for politics but he'd be a good president. no. if you're a bad politician, you're not going to be a good president either. >>

guess it was in florida with newt gingrich where he basically took gingrich's pants off on the issue of what was in his investment portfolio and won that state by a big margin. this is obviously tk- different. it's a national audience, not a republican audience, he has to win people over. it's a different kind of challenge over a sitting president who is pretty smooth performer. what john roberts said is right, debates sometimes make a difference but not very often. normally what happened in debates people for you going in are still for you coming out and not a lot of minds get chained. chris christie saying it could change everything, it could happen but not very much. martha: if somebody loses their pants it might be a game changer. we'll be watch that very closely. >> that depends, martha entirely on the design of the electri lecterns. >> we'll wait for the town hall format and hope for that perhaps. you just mentioned chris christie, what do you think he is up to by that comment? >> i have no idea and i'm sure the romney headquarters in boston, they are scratching their heads up
